SARLAHI: Amid reports of rampant deforestation in the district and suspension of District Forest Officer Shekhar Kumar Yadav for his alleged involvement in timber smuggling, a central probe committee of the Federation of Community Forestry Users, Nepal (FECOFUN) today inspected community forests, including the Brahasthan forest.

At a programme organised after the inspection, committee members, leaders of various political parties and members of civil society discussed ways to stop deforestation in the district.

Bhola Khatiwada, a probe committe member, said they would launch programmes to press the government to bring those involved in deforestation to book. Meanwhile, Sitaram Pokharel, FECOFUN district chairman, accused the District Forest Office of not heeding to calls to stop deforestation.
