Hariwan tense over newsreader's death

SARLAHI, July 20: Hariwan bazaar of Sarlahi district, which has remained tense for the past four days, following the mysterious death of a newsreader in a local radio station´s office, is yet to return to normalcy.

Family members and relatives of Usha Dahal, who apparently committed suicide three days ago by consuming poison, pelted stones at the office of Radio Sarlahi on Tuesday. Police had to use force to disperse agitators. Protesting what they called "police excess", the agitators then blocked the highway for about an hour.

Usha´s relatives had forcibly shut Radio Sarlahi. The radio had been playing just requiems following Usha´s death. As the radio started playing songs from Tuesday, Usha´s relatives went berserk, accusing the radio manager of not taking her death seriously.

Chuda Mani Wagle, Chairman of the board of directors of Radio Sarlahi, said that Usha´s suicide note holds no one guilty. But, Usha´s relatives have claimed that she was compelled to commit suicide.

Police´s refusal to lodge a complaint against Wagle has further irked Usha´s relatives. Her brother Dipak Dahal has demanded that the local administration fairly investigate into the incident.

Usha, a resident of Sasapur-3, had been living in Wagle´s house since she joined Radio Sarlahi. But one month earlier, Usha had started living in her own house. According to Wagle, Usha passed out frequently due to some mental problem while living in his house. A few months ago, she even took Rs 3,000 to visit a psychiatrist.

Usha had read a news bulletin at 2 p.m. on Saturday but was found dead when her colleagues started searching her for 3 p.m. news bulletin.
