A gunman of an armed criminal outfit was killed in an intense exchange of fire with police force in Sarlahi on Tuesday. No casualty was reported on the police side. Sarlahi police identified the gunman as Surendra, an activist of the criminal outfit active in the Terai districts. Surendra featured in the most-wanted list of the district police for his involvement in the killing of Brahmapuri VDC secretary Indra Shrestha and businessman Sambhu Das some time ago. Police said Surendra was also involved in extortion, abduction and other crimes. The cross-fire ensued at 11 am near the Bagmati river in Karmaiya-3 soon after the police team reached the place acting on a tip-off that Surendra was hiding in the village. Some 4-5 members of the criminal gang immediately opened fire after seeing the approaching police team. In the resulting police action, Surendra was killed while the members of his criminal gang fled the place.
